Slowdive – “Sugar For The Pill” (Avalon Emerson’s Gilded Escalation)

This Friday, the pivotal 90s shoegaze band Slowdive will return with a self-titled new album, their first in 22 years. Ahead of the release of the album, Avalon Emerson has been tapped for an official remix of “Sugar For The Pill”. Emerson’s wide-screen take begins in an open field, synth burbles slowly form into a spry melody reminiscent of Boards Of Canada‘s early tone-bent memory markers while Rachel Goswell’s vocals are sliced into echoing fragments. Suddenly at the 2:37 mark, the remix opens up into a wide expanse: Neil Halstead’s vocals are met with sharp, cracking drums. All of the elements congeal into an echoplex fantasia, a dub bassline and gently phasing hats bring everything back together. Slowdive have been graced with great remixes in the past and this remix adds another wonderful headphone adventure to the band’s bulletproof legacy.
