[EXCLUSIVE] IN THE MIX: “The Eskimo Mix,” Captain E

Eskimo Recordings has been a label on the forefront of experimental electronica, indie dance, and nudisco for the past 15 years. If you dig through their portfolio of releases, you’ll find the stunning likes of Satin Jackets, Prins Thomas, Aeroplane, Anoraak, and Kraak & Smaak. It’s a roster that would make any fan of independent dance music, disco edits, and crate digging salivate. The Belgian imprint’s focus on delivering euphoric dance aesthetics can be found with each groove, beat, and balearic note; they’re feels which call to mind the neon tipped, hazy 80s discotheque that so many artists chase in an increasingly digital world.

In celebrating Eskimo Recordings’ 15 years, and the recent release of their compilation The Yellow Collection, Eskimo label manager Captain E surprised us with an exclusive mix for Blisspop. When asked about what the mix represents to him, Captain E said:

“Since the beginning, the eclectic, but cutting edge label has produced in-between genres like cosmic, balearic and nudisco, indie dance, house, and electronica. The music Eskimo brings forth into the world all maintains a certain feeling without being beholden to any rigid formula, and the label has approached the divide between electronic and indie music with a reckless abandon that suggests that there is no divide at all. That’s why I believe Eskimo holds a unique stake within the indie dance world.”

The Eskimo Mix, a transcendent trip that comes close to almost an hour and a half of the blissed out, lush soundscapes which the label has become ubiquitous with, features legendary edits by many of the indie dance world’s greats. Tracks by Todd Terje, Prins Thomas, Satin Jackets, and even Claptone are in this glorious odyssey through the nudisco canon. Listen to The Eskimo Mix below and be sure to check out this year’s compilation, The Yellow Collection.
