Samuel Walker (aka Hotline) and Gavin Royce (aka Bad Decision, head of A&R at Nurvous/Nervous) recently linked up to form the Brooklyn-based production/DJ duo Walker & Royce. The uniquely versatile up-and-comers have released tracks and remixes that touch on deep and gritty techno, the funky elements of R&B-tinged disco and bright, colorful, 80′s-inspired indie dance.

Outputmessage – Game Over, Apple

Bernard 2

Outputmessage (Bernard Farley) – producer, DJ, record label owner, math nerd and lead singer of up-and-coming electronic group Volta Bureau – is about to release his first EP of 2011, entitled Game Over. It’s been approximately a year since the release of his esteemed second album, Autonomous, and he’s now conquering new musical territory in Game Over that employs 80s synth pop, disco, break-beat, Baltimore club, Hip-Hop, and some of his old IDM stylings.

In anticipation of its release on November 1st, we’re highlighting two of our favorite tracks from Game Over, ones that explore the lighter and darker side of Outputmessage.

The first being the title track; an upbeat, disco-tinged, electronic pop song lyrically revolving around the perceived end of a relationship. “Game Over” preserves Outputmessage’s signature emotive tone, with Farley repeatedly asking, “is it game over now?”

“Apple,” the darker, heavier, fourth track on Game Over, aptly showcases Farley’s vocal range, and explores a more villainous tone – this time incorporating a pulsating, hard-edged breakbeat (that leads to a powerful, sexy breakdown at around 2:01).

Be sure to catch Outputmessage at U Street Music Hall this Saturday, October 15th.

Casa del Mirto – The Nature

COVER

Italian chillwave group Casa del Mirto has indeed been a bit busy at the production table over the past 6 months. The catchy, dreamy pop released within their debut LP 1979 earlier this year caught my attention and has kept me on a listening/stalking spree since. I’m glad to hear they are now releasing a double album titled The Nature this month that contains new originals along with some contributions from Cornershop, Hot Sex & High Finance, and Holidays. The second version of the album will be entirely remixes and has yet to be released. Both versions of the album will be provided by Italy’s Mashhh! Records.

Casa del Mirto – Ultimatum

The Nature has a more relaxed rhythm compared to their debut release and seems to cover several directions of dance-friendly chillwave across all 17 tracks. “The new songs are the result of drawn out crises and major soul-searching,” says CDM’s lead Marco Ricci. Hints of Toro Y Moi and Washed Out can be found throughout the stretched synths, deep and bitter beats, and echoed vocals, however the group gives more variety with collaborations with other genres. The track “Ultimatum” definitely enlightens the album with a nostalgic vibe but then kicks into the hip-hop scene with the track “Bulls” featuring Vancouver rap group Hot Sex & High Finance. On the softer side of the album, the track “Human Feelings” slows down the rhythm, turns off the lights, and drifts you into an intimate, bass heavy, dream-like atmosphere – catch the video below.

You can purchase the original version of The Nature on iTunes.

More Plastic Plates Please

Moving quickly up the nu-disco ladder, Plastic Plates, has just put up another disgustingly good remix on Soundcloud, this time mixing up Mark Ronson‘s tune “Record Collection.” You may remember Plastic Plates aka Felix Bloxsom after our post back in April featuring his Social Studies mix. This new track is a little darker and a little more dancefloor ready than some of his older tunes, with a hot little break-down and plenty of the funky space vibes that we can always expect from Plastic Plates.

This remix of Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain” won my heart a couple of months ago and I’m still straight addicted. Listen and DOWNLOAD below (yayyyyyyyy).

Plastic Plates played recently at U Hall supporting Classixx with an opening set by our very own Mr. Bonkerzz. Look Out for an interview coming soon…
