LA’s Classixx have been tearing it up for some time now, and this Saturday they will hit the decks with Will Eastman, Micah Vellian, Ed Dudes at U Street Music Hall. Cop their ballin’ XM Mixtape 1 below for a preview.
If there was one thing we wish Washington had more of in the summer, it would be big block parties with music, food trucks, grilling – the works. Thankfully, local streetwear label Durkl (durkl.com) is giving us the perfect Memorial Day Sunday with a free outdoor party in a large parking lot behind its Chinatown headquarters at Fifth and I streets NW. (The actual entrance to the parking lot is at 452 K St.) There will be three grills if you want to bring (and grill) your own burgers and brats, plus another grill for vegetarians. If you don’t feel like cooking, look out for Sweetgreen and the Fojol Brothers truck. The icing on this free party is a who’s who of the Local DJ scene. Come get down to Fort Knox Five, Will Eastman and Brian Billion (Bliss), the Nouveau Riche crew, Stereo Faith (Sorted), Chris Burns, Beautiful Swimmers, Jackie O and Lil’ Elle (Kids), and Deep Sang (Dirty Bombs), among others. Bring food, drink, bocce sets, Frisbees – whatever you need for a hot time at a summer block party. – Fritz Hahn (May 25, 2010)

Start off the weekend right with a fresh new remix and original track from Dillon Francis. LA’s young talent is off the charts right now.
The Radio Dept. are back! I’ve been a fan of these guys since their 2002 Labrador records ep Where Damage Isn’t Already Done and was pleased when they subsequently released records with label-of-many-many-fantastic-and-big-artists, XL. They kinda went radio silent after that, at least for me, but it’s a treat to have them back and this song is a perfect soundtrack to a roof top party or night cap, just in time for summer.
New York sensation Penguin Prison has busted through the iron bars of music industry mundanity to deliver some fresh dance pop hits. Unabashed in his sugary and juicy attempt at Prince-like pop stardom, Penguin Prison is sparkling and delicious. I’m a sucker for pseudo-sad-love songs about cars, and Penguin Prison doesn’t disappoint with his new single “The Worse It Gets,” chalk-full of buoyant piano riffs, chiming synths, funk-guitar lines, groove-able rhythm, and soulful crooning. If we all had a song like this and a car named Jenny for when times get tough, there’d be a lot more dancing and a lot less crying in the world.
After teasing us with remixes and samples, Will Eastman’s Plant Music label-mates Smalltown Romeo have finally released their latest single, Boom Ha (feat. Shad K). Their video (above) is a graphic designer’s wet dream and without a doubt a party starter.
Australian duo Calling In Sick transform Cullen’s latest single “Easily Impressed” into a bangin’, synth-heavy masterpiece. Word on the street is that these Ray Ban sporting bro’s put on an ill parties as well – Most definitely on my to do list next time I’m down under.
This Saturday, May 22nd Will Eastman’s forward-looking dance party, BLISS, returns after setting a record attendance for U Street Music Hall last month. Eastman’s remix for Reni Lane’s “Place For Us” peaked at number two among Hype Machine charts in March, and his remix of the Pipettes’ “Stop The Music” was released three weeks ago as an iTunes exclusive. He is currently wrapping up a new single set to be released this summer through legendary Chicago house label, Trax.

This sensual but peppy neu-disco joint from Ocelot, remixed by young phenom and French House extraordinaire Louis La Roche, is smooth, sexy, a little bit sappy, and totally trying to get in your pants. Let it in, it’s for the best.
