BLISS Saturday with special guest DJ Stretch Armstrong

Guest DJ: Stretch Armstrong (Plant Music, NYC)

Internationally renowned deejay/producer/overall music impresario Stretch Armstrong has enjoyed a nearly two-decade career that has remained as diverse, eclectic and inspired as his home city New York. As a native New Yorker who grew up on the edge of Spanish Harlem, he began absorbing all of the underground sounds of the city – from early hip-hop to freestyle, disco, reggae and everything else – straight from his home streets at a very early age.

While already an established figure in the New York City underground dance circuit, Stretch’s true bridge to international notoriety came in 1990 via a humble college radio show that he began on WKCR 89.1 FM when the stale state of hip-hop radio led him to develop his own twist on the mix shows he was weaned on. Anchored by the voice and humor of friend Bobbito Garcia, THE STRETCH ARMSTRONG SHOW W/ BOBBITO THE BARBER quickly became the cornerstone for the burgeoning world of hip-hop, and was named the “Best Hip-Hop Show of All Time” by The Source magazine.

While much has changed since his early days, Stretch listens, works and loves with the same ears that drew him to hip-hop in the eighties, and remains focused on evoking passionate responses from live audiences. He plays a continually evolving, eclectic mix of club music, favoring the sounds that are most whimsical and violating of traditional genre boundaries to club goers both here and abroad.

Stretch is the co-owner of New York-based Plant Music, which is home to such talents as Clubfeet, Tittsworth, Eli Escobar, Will Eastman, The Glass, Dillon Francis, Kap10 Kurt, NROTB, Loose Shus, Smalltown Romeo and others. Catch him every Monday night on East Village Radio along with Eli Escobar for The Delancey Music Service.

Guest DJ: Fabiana (Garutachi, DC)

DJ Fabiana is a DC native who stepped onto the club circuit in 2009. Her sets reflect her eclectic taste ranging from electro, disco, house, & hip hop. She currently holds a monthly residency at the Garutachi party at Rock and Roll Hotel, and has performed alongside major acts at the 2009 and 2010 Winter Music Conference in Miami.

BLISS Sat, March 27 at U STREET MUSIC HALL!

Dear friends,

Join us for BLISS this month at our new home, U Street Music Hall!

U Street Music Hall was built from the ground up to host a party like BLISS. It’s a no-attitude basement music venue at 12th & U with the feel of a laidback rock club, cheap drinks and a fantastic, 40,000 watt sound system. (One word… BASS.) We’ll have more space to dance and there’s a 60’ wooden, cork-padded dance floor! Invite all your peeps. Looking forward to seeing you at our first BLISS in the new space, this Saturday March 27th, and 4th Saturdays thereafter.

Hope to see you there!

Will

A new home for BLISS!

Dear friends,

We’re thrilled to announce some very exciting news. As many of you already know, for the past year I’ve been working on creating a brand new music venue created to host the kind of parties I’ve been throwing for the past decade. U Street Music Hall is set to open March 17th and I’m proud to announce it will be the new home for BLISS Dance Party.

U Street Music Hall is a no-attitude basement music venue at 12th & U with the feel of a laid back rock club, cheap drinks and a fantastic sound system. Really, you just have to hear it. There’s no bottle service, no velvet rope and no bullshit. The focus is entirely on the music, and it’s been built from the ground up to be a world class venue hosting both DJs and live acts.

For some time now, lines have been building up at BLISS, and more often than not we’ve had to hold the door before midnight. At U Street Music Hall, we’ll have plenty of space and a 60 foot long wooden dance floor to go in as much as we want. We’re looking forward to seeing you at our first BLISS in the new space, March 27th, and 4th Saturdays thereafter. In the meantime, please follow U Street Music Hall on Twitter or become a fan of U Street Music Hall on Facebook.

See y’all at there!

Will

BLISS Sat Feb 27: Outputmessage Record Release

Dear friends,

Whoa! Many thanks to everyone who packed out an all-time attendance record setting BLISS last month, and to the legion of revelers who threw down with us at a sold out 9:30 Club last Friday for No Scrubs Dance Party. DC, we love you!

We’re back this Saturday and can’t think of anyone better to help us throw down than our good friend, Outputmessage. This month at BLISS we’re excited to celebrate the release of Outputmessage’s 2nd album, “Autonomous.” Bernard (aka Outputmessage) will join us for a special guest DJ set and we’ll give away 20 CDs of Autonomous to the first lucky peeps through the door. Each CD will have a download code for getting remixes from the album’s 3 singles. Our dude Pete Glow also joins us on the decks, starting the night out right.

See you there!

Outputmessage (Output Noise Recordings)

While still a student at Virginia Tech studying mathematics, Bernard Farley, aka, Outputmessage released the tracks “Bernard’s Song” and “Sommeil” on Ghostly International’s Idol Tryouts 1 & 2 compilations. 2004 saw the release of the Oneiros EP (Echelon Productions). Ranging from Autechre-like productions in unusual time signatures to ambient string arrangements, this release is what ultimately got the attention of David Cooper, head of Melodic Records who, in 2006, released Farley’s proper debut LP, Nebulae. It managed to get praise from URB (who also named Outputmessage a member of URB’s Next 100 that year), XLR8R, and Pitchfork.

In 2009, Farley started his own DC-based imprint, Output Noise Records, and released a series of digital-only singles that served as a preview to his new vocal-pop sound. Now in 2010, his second full-length, Autonomous, is a highly-anticipated release from the emerging DIY scene in DC and has already received play from DC DJ/Producer heavyweights such as Dave Nada (of Nadastrom) and Will Eastman (Plant Music/Blisspop.) The album signifies a turning point for Farley’s music. His earlier compositions, although dense, had always been heralded as catchy and poppy for an IDM producer. His songs have now become even poppier, but most importantly, he has started incorporating his own voice. With Autonomous, Farley manages to present bittersweet reflections into catchy and uplifting pop songs, much like the melancholic sentiments expressed in a Pet Shop Boys or a New Order song.

Pete Glow

Things to know about Pete Glow: He loves the many flavors of house music more than anyone has ever loved anything, and maybe even more than that. He misses the reign of come-as-you-are warehouse clubs. He embraces new genre mutations but fundamentally remains a student of house music history. He was making weekly record store pilgrimages to stock up on the latest vinyl coming out of New York when he was 12 years old, and remains pretty much the same nerd today. He loves to make people dance (references available upon request).
